Aggressive Play Part 2 -- Checkraising the Flop

When should we checkraise? When it accomplishes our goals. What does a checkraise accomplish? First, a high percent of the time, our opponents fold. Second, it bloats the pot. If you watch some of the "Biggest Pot Ever" hands, with the high-stakes and deep stacks, you can rest assured that every single one of them features a flop checkraise.

So, if we have top pair, checkraising is pretty bad. We're bloating the pot with a hand that could easily be behind, and we're only getting called when we're behind. With hands weaker than top pair, we are checkraising as a bluff. This is a legitimate strategy and a good way to balance your range and get some extra value on flops the opponent rarely hits. With hands stronger than top pair, we are checkraising in order to bloat the pot. In HUSNGs, this isn't always necessary because the stacks are relatively small. If we can get all the money in without a check-raise, we should take a different line, in order to get value from hands that would fold to a checkraise.
